MARGARET AVRIL LAWSON joined the firm in 1982 and is a partner in the firm's Intellectual Property group. This group includes trademark, trade secret, copyright and right of publicity. Margaret graduated from Dartmouth College, summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and Harvard Law School.

Margaret represents clients ranging from start-up businesses, software developers, inventors and authors to established research institutions, banks and nationwide franchisors in IP protection, enforcement and transactions. She has extensive experience negotiating licenses and technology transfer agreements in areas that include biomedical technology, software, e-commerce, data storage and security, publishing and franchising. She oversees the registration and maintenance of IP portfolios in the United States and foreign countries and assists clients with cross-border transactions.

Margaret's practice also has included representation of limited liability companies, corporations (including nonprofit associations) and partnerships in a variety of business matters, including mergers, acquisitions and financing transactions.

Margaret is a member of the Cincinnati Intellectual Property Law Association and the Intellectual Property Law Section of the American Bar Association. She also serves as secretary of the Harvard Law School Association of Cincinnati. Margaret has published articles and lectured and moderated the International Trademark Association's roundtable discussions concerning the right of publicity, trademark and other intellectual property topics. Margaret was honored as the 1999 Leading Woman in Law by Leading Women, a coalition of Greater Cincinnati women's groups. She was a member of Leadership Cincinnati Class XXIV, sponsored by the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce and was appointed to the Steering Committee. She is listed by Best Lawyers in America in four categories: copyright law, corporate law, information technology law and trademark law and was named "Lawyer of the Year" in 2016 for Cincinnati Information Technology Law and in 2015 for Cincinnati Trademark Law. In addition, she was recognized in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business, and she was also named an Ohio Super Lawyer, a listing of the top five percent of Ohio attorneys published by Cincinnati Magazine. She sits on the board of the Executive Service Corps of Cincinnati (ESCC) and is on the Board of Trustees for the Economics Center at the University of Cincinnati. Margaret currently serves on the executive committee, has served as a member of the firm's recruiting committee and has chaired the Professional Women's Resource Group (PWRG).
