Summary

As the son of a retired small business owner, James learned his strong work ethic and the importance of financial planning from his parents. With a business mindset, his guiding concerns are to work efficiently and advise clients pragmatically.

James advises high-net-worth individuals, fiduciaries, and family offices on all facets of estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer tax planning. He drafts comprehensive estate planning documents and frequently advises clients on transferring business interests into trusts to achieve their planning objectives.

In addition, James routinely works with fiduciaries on all phases of estate and trust administration, including the review of state and federal estate tax returns and gift tax returns. He also has experience with federal and state estate, gift, and income tax audits.

James is known for his responsiveness  and he maintains clear and consistent communication with clients, ensuring they feel supported throughout the decision-making process. When faced with complex matters, James investigates all possible outcomes and advises his clients on the most beneficial path forward.

While attending the University of Virginia School of Law, James served on the editorial board of the Virginia Tax Review and worked with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) pro bono program to prepare individual income tax returns for low-income residents of Charlottesville.
